I wrote to my congressmen today

Obama's budget cut of the current space program affects me two ways - first, Marty is working on the Orion Project (big impact, hello!), second, space exploration is absolutely awe-inspiring to me. I like sci-fi, I like space, I like NASA. I tend to be more Libertarian when it comes to my views on the government but it's funny because I also ( Read more... )

Marty talked to his boss and we shouldn't panic yet. Lockheed has got lobbyists (of course!) and certain congressmen on our side so they'll fight it. Even if Obama's budget passes, Marty's job isn't in danger for about a year. So at least we have some time to prepare. At this point we'll just see what happens.

I've lost all my faith in NASA. I was promised a jetpack in 2010, dammit! >(

I understand where you are coming from, and it sucks : / The federal government has to cut spending somewhere (the totally unbalanced budget is proof of that) but when they do, SOMEONE is going to be affected. People are going to lose jobs, period. The fed is a huge employer in this country, directly and indirectly. So how to do you value those jobs, who gets to keep theirs and who loses? How can you reconcile the need for less spending but a need for more jobs? I guess the supposition is that the private sector should move in and fill the need. It can't be a win-win for everyone. Just thinking about it makes me morose.

Best wishes for you and Marty. And for NASA. We'll see what happens.

Yeah, to be honest, even if something does happen to Marty's job, I figure Lockheed will either transfer him or he'd find another job and I don't think it'd be hard for him, BUT, in either of those events I'm sure we'll have to move and we just bought the house cause we figured we'd be here awhile. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

Quite honestly, I wouldn't care at all if Obama cut funding for the entire space program except that I have a selfish personal investment because of you and Marty. So I don't want it cut. On ethical, non-personal grounds, though, it really ought to be privatized. :>

I hope everything works out for you guys so that you can stay in New Orleans in your lovely, remodeled new house, which we are going to see in August...

Yeah well, there are private companies and they haven't done shit. :P I was going to say that with Obama's plan, if the government is going to contract these 'private' companies to do the job, how is that any different from what they're doing now with Lockheed Martin and Boeing? But I get what you mean in that you wish that space exploration would be completely privatized. Anyways, I'm not Libertarian anymores. XD I'm Independent, it's just easier cause then I just believe what I believe and that's it without labeling myself.

I waver between being an anarcho-capitalist and being entirely apathetic, so I get where you're coming from. :) Nothing I believe is ever going to occur in our society, so it's somewhat pointless to advocate for it. I certainly don't support Obama's plan; he's just going to take the space money and spend it on stupid things.
