I can only assume that it's referring to a golliwog, that blackface character from children's literature.

Really? I'm surprised. Maybe I'm just thinking of that because I was recently discussing golliwogs with my mother.. They were, as I said, blackface characters in children's lit that got phased out in the name of propriety. You should look it up on Google Images or Wikipedia -- nothing like some old-fashioned racism to really make your day..
