Teyla stood on the balcony overlooking the ocean. She closed her eyes as the ocean breeze whipped through her hair.
It was late enough so that she was probably one of the only people awake in Atlantis. She suffered these bouts of insomnia more frequently since Carson’s death. She kept thinking about things she had not been able to say to him. She wished she had been able to tell him how important he was to her, to tell him how much she valued his friendship. Now, all she could do was stay up late at night, stare at the ocean, and pray that somehow he knew what she had felt but not said.
John stepped out onto the balcony behind her. He had noticed that she slept erratically, and she had suffered more and more bouts of completely sleepless nights.
He noticed because he had also been suffering insomnia. It was not that unusual for him. He had been prone to bouts of insomnia for years, but since Carson’s death, he had slept less and less.
He crossed the short distance between them and spoke softly, trying not to startle her, “Sleepless night again?”
Teyla nodded without looking at him, “Yes, and you as well?”
“Yeah,” He shrugged, “I just can’t seem to relax lately.”
“I find relaxation difficult as well,” She turned to him slightly, “I miss him.”
“So do I,” John agreed, “I’ve lost friends before in the military, but this time is different. Carson was…”
“Special,” She offered.
“Carson,” He smiled halfheartedly, “Is that why you can’t sleep?”
“That,” She affirmed, “But also there are things that I wish I had the chance to say to him.”
“I think that happens with everyone we lose. There are things we should have said when we had the chance, but we screw up the opportunity.”
Teyla nodded, “Do you believe it is because there are things we cannot say in certain situations?”
John turned and met her eyes. He searched their brown depths, feeling comforted by her always warm presence, “I think there are always things between people that can’t be said for one reason or another.”
She felt her heart ache as she gazed into his eyes. There were many things she wished to say now, but she was not certain they should be said aloud.
“And you? Are there things you wish you could say to someone that you can not?”
He swallowed the lump that had instantly formed in his throat when she asked the question. Of course there were things he wanted to say, especially to her. He wanted to tell her how he felt about her, to tell her that he had fallen in love with her quite some time ago, to tell her that he wanted to love and protect her for the rest of his life…There was too much he wanted to say to her.
“I…” He paused. How could he get through these next few moments without compromising their friendship and the cohesion of his team?
“John,” She reached out gently, touching his arm, “There are things that I wish to say that I find I cannot.”
“I know what you mean,” He agreed. Were these things about him? To him? Were they possibly talking about the same thing?
Teyla stepped closer to him, “But, of course, there are things that should not,” She paused with a slight pain in his voice, “Cannot be said. Some things are better not being spoke aloud.”
He nodded, the ache in his heart again threatening to choke his voice from his throat. He knew he could never tell her how he felt without damaging their working relationship, and he worried that telling her might also damage their friendship. He would risk his life for Atlantis, but he would never risk the closeness he and Teyla shared…not for anything in the universe.
John started to speak but her fingers over his lips cut him off.
“Do not speak,” She urged as she moved within a breath of him, “Do not speak of things we dare not say aloud.”
He sensed her intention without any words passing between them. He eased his lips lower to hers. Their lips brushed in a soft whisper of a kiss.
“I love you, Teyla,” He whispered so softly he was positive she would never hear him before he captured her lips with his.
Teyla molded herself against his body and into his arms. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing herself against him and never wanting to let go. She had wanted this for so long, too long. She had never experienced such powerful emotion for anyone as she did for John Sheppard. He had enveloped her with his presence, and she ached when she was apart from him. This moment, this perfect moment, was one she had been dreaming of for the last few years.
As their lips parted, he met her warm encompassing eyes while caressing her cheek, “Where do we go from here?”
She smiled softly, “I do not know.”
John kissed her once again, enjoying the very essence of the things they could not say while experiencing those very things in reality.
Teyla whispered against his lips between kisses, “I love you too, John Sheppard,” She melted against him, having said the things that previously could not be said.
