Sharing a little fun ficlet called "The All-Pack Meal." It's been running around in my head since November.
Original work. Enjoy but please respect.
The older dog looked around and growled softly. Stop chewing on my tail.
The one-year-old looked up at him with mournful eyes. I can’t help it. i’m nervous. i don’t know what’s going on.
Ah. The older dog sighed and relaxed. It’s an all-pack meal.
The younger dog dropped what he was doing to flop down next to the new pack mate he was visiting. What’s that?
The human packs all come together to share a meal at different changes of weather. It’s cool but not cold outside, so this is the all-pack meal with the bird.
Bird? The pup shook his collar and panted excitedly. I love chasing birds!
This is a monster bird, half your size. The humans cook it and eat it along with other things that smell very good.
The pup nuzzled the older dog’s ear. Will the humans share? My humans sometimes share with me. I find things in my bowl.
Yes, I like things in my bowl, too. But sometimes humans will toss you a piece. You have to be good, though. No going in the out room.
Yes, the room humans cook in. I wonder why humans call it the out room?
The older dog yawned. It is the room we are supposed to stay out of.
The younger dog let his tail thump the floor in joy. The floor container in the out room has delicious things in it.
Yes, as a pup, I discovered that as well. Now I am patient and stay away, and my humans bring me the delicious things and tell me I’m good.
They do? Oh, I can do that! I can stay away! He reached up and started chewing on the older dog’s ear.
Stop that.
But I want something delicious!
Then put your head between your paws and look up at the humans. Just keep watching them. You must learn patience
The pup did as he was told and sighed. This works?
Almost always. The older dog licked his chops and continued to study the floor around the table. Plus, human puppies always spill so that’s a sure thing.
The pup raised his head expectantly.
No, no. The older dog thumped his tail as he watched another morsel fall. We must wait until the humans get up from eating. Then we move in.
