Am is A minor (AM or A Maj is A major).
The 6 figures represent the strings, top to bottom, low to high. In the first one, Am, the x means you don't strum that string (that's an E, which is in the chord but it's an E below the root, A; so it would sound odd to have it in the chord) The O means it's "open", no fingers on it (it's A, the root of the chord) 2 is second fret, so you place a finger on the D string to make it an E (the 5th of the chord). The next 2 is on the G string, making it an A, the 1 is B string, first fret, making it a C, the minor third and the 0 is open on the E string, another 5th. It's the same for all of the other ones. Call me when you get stumped, I know it's confusing at first but soon you'll be serenading the stars....

Oh, one other thing....the G/B means a G chord (Major) over a B in the bass (the B is the major third of a G major chord). This is used mostly as a "Leading" chord, leading to a C chord, although it can be used going from C to A minor as a downward leading chord. If they'd wanted a G minor over the minor third, it would have been Gm/Bb which would, of course, required different fingering and, after hours of frustration, resulted in the guitar being hurled against the wall in rampant, uncontrolled anger....

Yeah, I know the chords.. I just was wondering about the numbers!
And yes, you're right, the G/B is a descendant from the C to Am.
