A few random thoughts

I saw a Denny’s ad on TV and knew it was Denny’s even before they showed the logo, just from looking at the food.  It’s always yellow!  I’m serious, the food in Denny’s ads (and presumably at Denny’s itself, although I wouldn’t know), is always yellow-ish.  It’s the strangest thing.  The next time you see one of their ads, look for yourself.

I've heard that Windows 8 doesn't open apps in little windows that you can size and arrange and move around and overlap however you want. In other words, one of the Fundamental Freedoms since Windows 3 has now evaporated! Is this true?

The new standard apps for Windows are indeed full-screen by default (called "immersive apps" by Microsoft), similar to what you'd see on an iPad, but unlike the iPad, you can put two of them on the screen side-by-side and resize them too. But in general, you're correct, that the "windows" part of Windows is no longer the preferred user experience (UX). The apps fill the screen and you don't see a taskbar or title bar or any of the "chrome" you are used to seeing around Windows or Mac applications.

However, you can still run the Windows desktop, and any of your current Windows applications in exactly the same way you do today. Both the new immersive apps and the older Windows applications are fully supported and you can go back and forth between them, and even have both types on the screen at once.

It’s always yellow!

Layer of phlegm applied by the cook as a garnish.

You have to be nicer to your waitress to avoid that garnish!
