Mission accomplished. It took me about an hour and a half of aimless wandering, but eventually I did find something for the shower. I think the clerk took pity on me when I sat down a stuffed Pooh toy for the eight-hundredth time, bless her heart. I finally settled on a plush ballerina doll for the child, and like Jessica suggested, something for my sister-in-law, too. I feel strange buying a spa kit for a woman I've seen maybe a dozen times in the past decade, but the clerk assured me that she'd love it.
Then again, the clerk's modus operandi is to sell me something.
On the way out, I ran into an old friend from the NYPD and we talked for a while over coffee, before he invited me for dinner with his wife on Tuesday night at Sarabeth's. I agreed, but I'm starting to have second thoughts. Does he expect me to bring a date? It's a nice restaurant, and I'm pretty sure the missus was expecting a night alone with him. I don't want to be a third wheel. How do I get out of this?
