It depends if the bad thoughts are actually hold water. For instance there is a legitimacy in fearing a loved one's death or injury if they're a soldier at war, and subsequently thinking about that frequently can be detrimental to your health so anything you can do to quiet that fear and push those thoughts from your mind would be welcomed and advisable. If, on the other hand, your fears/bad thoughts are paranoia or OCD induced and you constantly push them away it might be deemed as avoidance, but more in the sense that you're not dealing with the cause of the thoughts (ie: not seeking help in dealing with mental health issues)
