Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2016

It's 2016. The Chainsmokers are on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Rogue One. New terms coined include: cancel culture, girlboss, MAGA, and touch grass.

It's been a while since my last post. I read quite a few seasonal fics in December, which cut into my reading of bingo fics. I've also adopted a dog, Annabel, which has been absorbing a lot of my mental energy. Here she is in the sweater I made for her:




Now, on with the show. For 2016, I read five works: one Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic, two Professionals fics, one Sherlock Holmes fic, and one crossover (if you can call it that) between Sherlock Holmes and the cartoon Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic was itself a seasonal fic: Storm of the Century by Avery11. In this fic, Napoleon, Illya, and Illya's cat have an adventure on a very snowy Christmas Eve. This fic was a fun and charming romp. I liked it a lot. I love MFU fic that is more serious and realistic than the show, but fic like this that doesn't take anything too seriously can really work, too. 5,401 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.

I also read two quite different supernatural AUs in Professionals fandom.

First was Psychic Dreams by Ankaree, one of the fics recommended during the rec panel at this year's Bistocon. In this fic, Doyle is a psychic dream interpreter who gets mixed up in a CI5 investigation. I was a bit doubtful of this fic's premise initially, but I thought the story worked. The central mystery was engaging, and psychic!Doyle was both likeable and recognizable as our Lad. I found myself wishing I could have him interpret some of my dreams. Another good point of this story was the way relationships other than the romantic one between Bodie and Doyle figured in the plot. 56,195 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.

The second Pros AU I read was Here Be Monsters by Agent_Talis, in which the Lads investigate strange crimes that reveal a new dimension to their world. This fic was good, too. All the characterizations were well done, with Cowley's standing out in particular. There were also some excellent action sequences. 34,520 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.

The Sherlock Holmes story I read, The Adventure of the Colonial Boy by Narrelle M. Harris, was another commercially published pastiche. This one included a romantic relationship between Holmes and Watson, however. It takes place during the Great Hiatus, after the death of Watson's wife, when Watson receives a telegram summoning him to Australia. There he finds Holmes, and the game is once more afoot (🦶).

This book was pretty good. I thought it dealt successfully with the glaring problem of Holmes's behavior at the Reichenbach Falls, which is no mean feat. I also enjoyed the way it treated Watson's published stories as not strictly factual. That's a bit unusual. The book also included a lot of backstory for Watson. That, too, is unusual, though I never realized how unusual until reading this story. It was a welcome addition.

The detective work was less satisfactory. Holmes is shown several times leaping to what feel like unsupported, overly convenient conclusions. I also found it very distracting that after a certain point, the narration switched from referring to the leads as Holmes and Watson, and began calling them Sherlock and John. It was still a fun read on the whole, though. 236 pages. Holmes/Watson slash.

Finally, I read Internal System Reboot by mistyzeo, a crossover (if it can be called that) between Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories and the cartoon Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. In this story, Holmes and Watson were a couple in their own time. When Holmes is revived in the 22nd century, he encounters the robot facsimile of Watson. The story's account of how they interact is fascinating. This was my favorite fic for the year. 6,316 words. Holmes/Watson slash. Particularly recommended.
