Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2018

It's 2018. Drake is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Black Panther. New terms coined include: deepfake.

For 2018, I read five fics: one Man from U.N.C.L.E., one Professionals, and three Sherlock Holmes. There seems to have been a lot of Holmes fic lately.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic was Paris in May by Hypatia_66. This short mission fic sees Napoleon and Illya travel to Paris during the unrest of 1968. I enjoyed the story for its evocative descriptions of the Paris of the late 60s-apparently the author visited in 1967-and for its depiction of Illya's relationship with the city, where canon tells us he once lived. The inclusion of a real and dramatic historical event was intriguing, as well. Overall a good little fic. 5,957 words. Gen.

I also read the Professionals fic Smoke and Mirrors by ci5mates. In this story, an old friend and former colleague of Doyle's apparently takes her own life, but things may not be as they seem. I liked this fic, too. It had a lively plot and good pacing. I also liked the depiction of Bodie and Doyle's friendship. The only issue I had was with the amount of slang included in the dialog. It sometimes felt overdone, and it didn't match the way the characters talk in canon. (Possibly the author felt that the amount of slang in canon is artificially low.) 28,582 words. Gen.

Among the Sherlock Holmes fics, I read The Twelve Labors of Sherlock Holmes by okapi. This fic is a series of vignettes relating twelve episodes in Holmes' life that parallel the twelve mythical labors of Hercules. The fic also provides a glimpse into Holmes and Watson's retirement in Sussex, as well as a number of truly dreadful puns. It was an enjoyable, mostly light read with some amusing touches. 8,000 words. Holmes/Watson slash.

The Secret Fear by Sailors_Delight is a Sherlock Holmes fic in which Holmes and Watson run into difficulties in their romantic relationship. Holmes is a trans man in this story, which is an interpretation I'd never read before, for some reason, though it is not unique. I like this story all right. Its conflict was unusual and interesting. The character voices didn't feel quite right to me, though. (Holmes's is fiendishly difficult to capture, I think.) 2,250 words. Holmes/Watson slash.

Finally, I read The Craven Hive by OldShrewsburyian. This fic is outstanding and was my favorite for the year. More than that, it just made me want to make friends with its author. It's set at the end of WWI at a real hospital for soldiers suffering from what we would now call PTSD. It features some historical people and a lot of other carefully researched period detail. There is also an abundance of deftly handled emotion, and of course, a mystery. I would not say that the story's Watsonian voice quite matches that of canon, but then it is an older, war weary Watson who narrates it. The writing is very good, in any case. 35,627 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
