Just FYI...if someone breaks into your house and steals things...even if they are caught with your stuff in hand, you may not be able to get your things back unless you have the serial number or there is a unique and identifying mark.  So write down serial numbers and store them in a safe place. Lesson learned, and now it's coming into use

Take pictures AND write down serial numbers. Most home owner's insurance policies require you to take pictures of everything valuable and provide receipts, if possible. Digital archiving is well worth the effort in a case like you have described. I go one step further and spend $40 for a webcam that records on motion. Pictures are worth a MILLION words....or in the violator's mouth, SPEECHLESS!!!
