What happened when the Fiero crapped out? And why do you think it has something to do with compression? Even with a dead cylinder, the engine will run. FYI: if it has a timing belt, they like to go bad when it gets cold because the old rubber gets hard as a rock.

My husband tried to "fix" the catalytic without replacing it, and now the car won't idle anymore. His theory is compression, though I agree with you...it would have to be complete loss of engine compression to get the problems we're having. Which suggests no back pressure because the catalytic is a gaping hole, and holes in the exhaust = massive loss of power and awful timing. It would also explain why our engine was running rich (trying to spit more gas in to make up for lack of air/combustion).

Alas, the belts in the engine are solid, and it was still warm when the car started acting up. Even as cold as it's been, we're above freezing, so the rubber shouldn't be affected that much, even old rubber.

I know the feeling with being broke *hugs* Thankfully, it looks like I may be able to keep the roof over my head a while longer.

Congrats on the RL friends! And the paddle sounds interesting...if I had any spare at all, I might order one just for the handle ;)

Good luck on the 24th, you'll be in my thoughts.
