Sooooo I'm finally getting around to posting some of the 'first kiss' drabble prompts. This one was written for ryenna.

Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: River/anyone (was the request, so I chose River/Inara)
Rating: PG/PG-13?

River Tam had been on board Serenity for a few months, and already she had seen so many new things - Mal’s missions, strange parts of the ‘verse, Inara’s beautiful dresses - but it was not until she saw the careful way her brother kissed Kaylee that she decided something was missing. Simon’s confident, doctor hands had traced the curve of Kaylee’s cheek nervously, but Kaylee’s eager excitement had balanced them, and River had not been able to tear her eyes away.
When River was a child, there was no task that she did not follow through on, nothing she did that she was not capable of accomplishing. So this new task, to touch her lips to someone else’s, was approached and researched with as much determination and diligence as any math problem.

At first, she considered Jayne. Jayne had experience, she knew, she had seen a lot of it for herself. But Jayne was large and would probably be scratchy, and she didn’t think his muscular arms and square hands would be gentle on her face.

She’d asked Simon once, when she was about fourteen, and he had politely declined, calling her mei-mei and telling her she was his sister, and it wasn’t really appropriate.

She knew that Kaylee would probably do it, because Kaylee had a bright smile and liked River, but Kaylee was Simon’s, just like she was Simon’s, and she knew that sometimes her brother didn’t like to share.

Mal was too in love with Inara to even think about kissing River, she knew, and besides, he would never even give her a handshake, much less press his lips gently to hers.

Zoe and Wash were considered, because Wash had a silly laugh and a kind face, but Zoe would probably kill him, and River didn’t want to come between something so perfect.

River could never risk getting that close to the shepherd’s hair to even ask for a kiss.

Inara, in the end, became the most logical choice. River liked the way her clothes slid softly against the swells and curves of her body, and the way she was careful to keep her work private, which somehow made it special. It didn’t matter that she was a girl, and that girls were normally supposed to kiss boys, because lips were just lips in the end, really. It could be special for her, too, River knew, and that was why she found herself peeking around the half-open door of the companion’s shuttle one night while everyone else was asleep. She could see the candles and silk pillows, and the light seemed so warm that she slipped into the room without a word.

“River! What are you doing here?” Inara was surprised to have a visitor so late at night.

A giant smile spread over River’s face. “Will you kiss me?” she asked excitedly.

Inara was surprised, but could not turn away the eagerness on River’s face, so she stood, making her way over to the other girl, and, cupping the younger girl’s cheeks in her practiced hands, pressed her lips gently against River’s. River’s eyes widened, and she decided that it felt a little slimy, but in a good way, like when she sipped hot tea or ate thick rice noodles. She decided she liked it, and pouted when Inara pulled away.

Noooot really sure I got their voices down (it's been a while since I watched the show), but. Here it is anyway.
