I think there are a fair amount of gay people who don't have all that much else going for them, other than the fact that they identify with the gay community. I know a few kids from my school who only enjoy movies about gay topics, only hang out in gay clubs/cafes, and can't really talk about anything interesting, other than the fact that they are indeed gay. So maybe that kid was trying to distinguish himself from those people?
