Stupid English Language:S

For the last 2 months I have been helping a visiting scholar from Puerto Rico, who has been going to school in Madrid, practice her English.  She has an accent but is not hard to understand.  She is a wonderful person…kind and funny.

Until I started helping her, I never realized how difficult the English language truly is!  Just today, I was trying ( Read more... )

It is VERY difficult
It is why we used phonetics when I taught it in Turkey.
All of those words that sound same, have different meanings, e.g. two, to, and too

Exactly! She finds lots of words that sound the same but are different. Then someone went and told her swear words but not their meanings...that was an interesting lesson:)

Homophones, oh God. OH GOD! As someone who isn't a native speaker of English I can tell you that those will probably be always my biggest nemesis, even though I've been practicing English for almost 20 years now. But rest assured, every language becomes difficult once you have to explain it to someone else ;)

Homophones are pretty awful!:) While I teach her English, she is teaching me some Spanish...so far, she is much better at English than I am at Spanish!
