That's not a cost. It's a reward. For subscribing for 10 bucks a month (last I heard, they're keeping that price), you basically get access to the entire game (unless you don't have expansions) AND 500 Turbine Points per month to buy things from the shop with. The subscription will be the same as it is now.
However, Turbine Points should not be confused with Turbine Points. Yeah, DDO and LotRO will use the same named currency, but they're separate... I -think- 500 points is five bucks. I could be wrong on that.
Either way, It's better than the deal with Cryptic Points in CO.
That's the weird thing, actually. They didn't really -have- to do it. They've been solid with subscriptions ever since launch, with two expansions that sold rather well.
The only reason this is happening is because Dungeons and Dragons Online -did- have to a while back. -That- game was in serious trouble, and the free to play setup really revitalized it.
LotRO isn't in trouble, but it could certainly use a boost. As it is, it's one of those games where you need a kinship (guild) to reliably group up through the game. Hopefully after this, it'll have massive numbers throughout. The only problem, if DDO is to be used as an example, is that the population will now be staggered as to who has what content unlocked.
