Study Hall

Jan 30, 2006 09:24

So this is a general APB for help with study halls.

I've given the kids assigned seats, but they still talk. Any ideas on how to keep kids quiet beyond assigned seat and yelling (which is ineffective)?

At Thomaston High we split our study halls. The 1st 20 minutes are a mandatory silent reading time when all students must be reading a novel of some sort (whether it be for an english class or just a book that they choose to read doesn't matter, but absolutely no magazines are allowed.) After that they are to work on homework or studying. Any talking gets them a detention and if they insist on talking after being assigned a detention they get sent to the office with a written referral. Don't know if that helps or not...but implementing the silent reading time (during which absolutely no one is allowed to leave the room for any circumstance) seemed to help cut down on the chatting in ours...

Hope that helps.

I had my name put on the board up until tenth grade, I believe. At that point, they just used initials. After two check marks, there was some kind of discipline. At the very least, it was slightly embarassing.

If it was me, I'd probably make a comment like "No wonder your parents are divorced, Timmy, they probably couldn't stand listening to you talk all the time."

But then, I'm a sociopath.
