Nick complains his girlfriend washes up like a cargo cult. She's seen people put dirty dishes into water and they come out clean, but she doesn't understand the principles. So when she washes up she follows the superficial form, without really understanding how cleaning works, and the dishes stay dirty.

Nick's got a real thing about cleaning dishes/glasses properly hasn't he? - when we were round there for that D&D vampire's castle boardgame I remember he was saying Ellen leaves the glasses upturned on a flat surface so the moisture doesn't escape properly. I guess that only works on a draining board where there are gaps.

Leave glasses upturned on a flat surface and the moisture won't escape at all. You'll just end up with a surface-tension seal around the bottom of the glass and a pool of water at the bottom.
