no such roses do I see in her cheeks

Watching The End, two distinct points of color jump out in The Garden scene: Sam's Boss Hogg suit, and the rose bush.

Pretty pictures & some spoilers for 5x04 )

meta, supernatural, too much time on my hands

I wrote a whole meta on the Marian imagery of the rose and blue-Dean/white-Sam in the episode - And the Devil Wore White. The conclusion that I came to was that the episode - like the symbol that is Mary's character - is all about love and what Sam and Dean will do for each other.

Your post was really interesting--thanks for the link.

What if the white suit is in part meant to show us how Lucifer perceives himself (or how he wants to be perceived) than how he really is? Purity, truth, righteousness--he casts himself as innocent. Misunderstood. Unfairly victimized.

Nicely done, and very interesting.

The only thing I'd add is that Kripke has said that this season is taken heavily from Paradise Lost. It is while Eve has left Adam for the first time to work on her own, on the roses, that Satan first spies her and starts to work his wiles on her.

Oooh, interesting. I'm feeling a (somewhat reluctant) pull towards going back and reading Milton....

Honestly? I hate Milton. Haaaate. (And that's a big thing to admit as a PhD student in early modern literature.) But I have to teach parts of Paradise Lost most semesters. This year might be slightly better, since I can look for SPN season 5 parallels. :)

Heh. That would almost be enough for me. :) Maybe I'll pick it up again. . . . Someday.

I love that icon. You know Sam would be halfway through "Alas, poor--" before he could stop himself.

I know there is an interesting post out there about flowers in Supernatural, but I couldn't find a link.

Ooooo... now that's a dangerous question to ask.

bowtrunckle's Rose Iconography and Mary and Sam and her Blue Roses and Ava's got a secret

She got me going on the subject: Flower Imagery and the Unfolding of Secrets and Blue Roses and Ruby's got a secret and finally Flowers Uninterrupted in Season 5

Don't blame me if you get sucked in. ;D

Excellent! You've made some great discoveries here. The screencaps must have been quit a hunt. I would NEVER have caught that the boys went to the Blue Rose Motel in two different seasons.

Ave, of course, is "Hail" in Latin, as in Ave Maria, Hail Mary. Ruby is practically another word for red. I'm at work and can't geek out too much here, but I just wanted to say thanks for the great meta.

Thanks! It wasn't too bad. I'm a relatively new fan and picked up the show in Season 4. So I watched the rest in a huge marathon, which meant I had a pretty good idea of where to start looking for caps.

I love how Ava subverts Mary's story in the show--the young woman who didn't fight the demon.

I know this is way late to bring up now- but I randomly came across this today, and thought it was too cool not to share:

"The Tudor Rose can be red, representing Lucifer, or white, representing Lilith."

Never too late! Thanks for adding that. :) It makes me wonder why modern occultists would adopt the Tudor Rose in particular? England is evil?

I do kind of love that Henry VIII had a Tudor Rose painted onto the Winchester Round Table, though.
