Totally, yes. You're completely right that it extends beyond blondes.
I know Ruby wasn't a popular character and she was evil, blah blah, but I still haven't quite wrapped my head around the way the image and manner of her death at the end of S4 disturbed me. And then there's Pamela, and Bella, and Madison, and...
I was mostly pointing to Mary-Jess-Jo/Ellen and the disturbing way that all women (all of them blondes but Ellen) who are a significant part of the boys' lives for any length of time wind up victims and/or martyrs. I know I'm not articulating this well, but my reaction can still best be summed up by: grearrrrghh!
Yours is the wiser path. Much of my frustration with the gender issues has been on the backburner, mostly because I thought to myself, "Well, at least there's Jo & Ellen." So this foregrounded it for me.
I don't like the martyr thing at all, either. I honestly think Kripke was sticking it to the stans (just a little) out there who love to hate the female characters - You'd have to be heartless to hate Jo after this, thus, stans can't hate ehr anymore. I wish is wasn't her death that did the job.
Heh--like he decided to pack up his toys and go home if no one was going to play his way?
I understand he listens to the fans a lot? I wish he didn't. It's his show. I think I'd rather he stick to his plan than have something like this happen as a result, if that's the case.

I have chosen the "be conscious of gender issues without letting it ruin the show" path, but I firmly respect your position.
