Happy 9th birthday

May 22, 2010 22:14

Oh, it turns out my LJ turned 9 years old on the 19th.

On the internet, that's ancient.

I had to explain to classmates what IRC, Usenet, and BBSes are (were?).

Made me check my own journal's age. 9 years and a bit. We started at pretty much the same time. Heheh, BBSs, IRC, Usenet.. Pre and early History of the Internet. I still use IRC-speak on skype, msn, etc.. You realize how old this is when you talk with 'newcomers' (meaning after ICQ times) and they don't understand some of the usual abbreviations :) My favorite is /me :)

I used to say "grin" and "nod" which is what they say on BBSes. But no one says those anymore.

I also remember being VERY adamant about not using LOL, which was used by "newcomers" to the internet - i was staunch about using ROFL. But I use LOL a lot more now.

I also remember when the "World Wide Web" came out. I asked my ISP at the time (Prodigy) if they had it.

i remember irc and icq. i loved how icq had those doogie houser letter-by-letter chats. couldn't get a hang of usenet and what is bbs?? LOL

i jumped all over the blogsphere. I used to have a diaryland and then jumped ship for livejournal and then xanga because of the privacy settings. I remember when livejournal sign up though invite only. pretentious pricks. :P
