Reptile Show

So I finally got to attend my first reptile show today. I looked for years, but they were always too far away. Someone finally decided to have one close to me, like just 1 1/2 hour drive away. It was awesome!!!! People walking around with bearded dragons, snakes, and sugar gliders on their shoulders. Very cool. I ended up buying three snakes ( Read more... )

Not really a snake charmer, more like a snake keeper. I used to have several snakes in my school room, including a 12 ft. python that I regularly took to visit elementary classrooms. When they moved me to a room half the size of the one I was in, I had to get rid of a lot. Others died over the years until I had none left. I missed having them so I took this opportunity to restock ( ... )

Oh my word........those sugar gliders sound so darling.
I don't know why I was reminded when I read of the gliders of
'busy babies' that I saw when I was at a game reserve in South Africa.
They came out at night......and were very timid
First time when we were on the veranda after dinner with our tracker and suddenly something skidded by very quickly very near to where we were seated. Our tracker said very quickly:
"Bush baby" and then described what it was....
The next night I was able to see the little guy:

A sugar glider is the marsupial version of a flying squirrel, but much smaller. The adult easily fits in the palm of your hand. They are very gentle and tend to bond to their caregiver. They are very cute and cuddly. We bought a pouch you can wear around your neck and they'll hang out in there a lot. If you have a pocket, they'll burrow down in it and sometimes peek over the edge. Very soft and very cute. If you annoy them or scare them they make this weird chittering noise for a few seconds. I got a male and a female. We'll see if I regret that decision in a year or two.

The thing that gave me the courage to try it was the people we bought them from don't live too far away and they said any babies we didn't want, they would buy from us. You could tell they really loved them in they way they handled them and talked about them. There was another guy selling sugar gliders there, but it seemed like just a business to him. These people treated their gliders like family. As they were loading up my starter kit, she kept adding stuff in there for free that we might need. They were super nice.
