I don't know the answer to your question about Century Link, but I have 2 Series 2 Tivos that I use with DirecTv using the IR connection and it works well. Is it possible you just didn't have your IR set up correctly? I don't think the Premiere TiVo works at all with DirecTv so you are probably better off with cable anyway since you own that one.

I never used The IR connection with the series 2, only the series 1. I couldn't find my IR cable when my old landlady switched to satellite and the TiVo would change channels but would be to slow so if it needed to get to channel 123 it would do 12 and take too long to hit 3 and so it would switch to 12 then 3 would come up on the screen and it'd switch to channel 3. That's how it also acted with the converter box and digital antenna too here but we also never got clear signals bc we're so far from the tv stations so it didn't matter anyways. I really can't wait til we move and can have cable tv and can order Pizza Hut and have city water. Lol
