I think I rather understand what you mean. When my grandfather died last year, he'd been ill for a while, and he hadn't been part of my life, really, for a long time. When we were growing up, I was sort of scared of him a lot of the time, since he was really big and had an outsized personality and too many teeth. But we didn't live that close to my grandparents, we didn't see them super often, and he wasn't a huge influence on me, so it was hard to grieve. I have some memories, and some good stories, I guess, but the impact wasn't really there.
But yeah... I'm sorry for your loss, anyway. It's a strange time.
