What's with all this crappy romance in my urban fantasy novel?

You've clearly missed out on the essential fact of womanhood, which is that as soon as a strong woman meets a halfway decent guy, or even some one who smells like he might be decent, she is happy to turn over every shred of independence. Because being a competent protagonist is so hard, and she has better things to do with her time.

LOL! Well, yes, there is a lot of that, but also, to be fair, a lot of the time, they have spent years being competent and kickass and probably without panting over everything in sight. It's just the book chooses to focus on the time when she does decide to pant.

Anyway, luckily, there are series out there who have women that don't immediately roll over and that actually develop a relationship / romance.

I just get frustrated when books don't develop the relationship and it just seems to ... come out of nowhere. It's even more irritating when one hasn't even gotten to really know the main character for herself before she starts imagining dinner dates. Well, the first part would be irritating regardless but it's worse when you have no context or sympathy for the protagonist's actions to help mitigate it.
