You're 31, not 80! I dunno, I would rather live in a nice place and have a long commute to a good job than have: a) a not so good job with a nice place. b) a crappy place with a great job.
I'm with you on commuting, man. I have some friends who live 50-60 miles west of DC and commute in every day by car. They get up at 4:30 in the morning and hit the road by 5. They come home early (leave work by 3:30, I think), but they have to be asleep by 9PM so they really don't have much time at home after work. It sounds shitty as hell to me.
I like my commute--10 seconds from bedroom to office.
Not everyone can be Ed. But that's not because of the short commute, it's because you're one of a kind! :)
Hey man, that's the best commute ever. Your friends are crazy, I still don't understand the choices people make. I've become a bit spoiled I think. The 20 minute commute is so heavenly, I can't even tell you.
20 minutes is probably the perfect commute. My dream commute was when I lived in Capitol Hill and it took me 20 minutes to walk to work. That sucked when I sprained my ankle, but hell, it was great the rest of the time.

Depends on the person, I suppose.
