The great thing about being Tomica, who in your eyes is never single for very long is that I have had a variety of boyfriends, most of them not so great. To make a long story not so long I basically ended up bringing home all of the ones that were mothers worst nightmare. As such the family generally doesn't put too much pressure on me to "hurry up and settle down." I realized I was smarter than my parents in eighth grade. Another something I do when family brings up my lack of adding to it is to begin describing my newest(and most fictional) boyfriend, he's fabulous by the way. When they ask why my significant other isn't attending? "Oh, I wouldn't subject him to you people." And because they never took the time to get to know me they never know whether or not I'm kidding. Works like a charm.
I've had that moment with both of my parents, many times... Even before college and a B.Sc.
Most recently, I was relating to her my decision to be happy as I am, and the conversation went like this:
Stace: ...so I've decided to just be happy as I am, because I'm fine and healthy. Mom: But... you can't do that! Stace: You're saying I can't be happy? Mom: *silence and crickets*
And of course, she often asks me what big words like 'disaggregate' mean.
As the neglected child of an immature drug addict, I realized that I was smarted than my mother when I turned 10 and became older than her. The worst part is that now she's "trying to make up for it" when I really wish she would just leave me alone.
I guess I've been somewhat blessed in that both sides of my family are somewhat apolitical. Does make for an interesting episode when they say something fairly ignorant and my dad starts correcting them due to being the political junkie he is.
Then again, they can't exactly play the military card since he was in Vietnam too.

I assume she means well, and only wants what she thinks is best for ya, like my own, but yeah...
It really is hard to communicate with Mothers.
