40 lbs

Mar 22, 2008 16:03

Next November I will be 40. This one seems big. 30 just wasn't a big deal to me at all. My folks have always said that I have been 30 since I was about 9 so I guess hitting that milestone just felt like I was finally coming into my rightful state of being. Also, my twenties? Complete hell. Hated ever single bit of it. They were full of self ( Read more... )

I have cut out bread. My biggest downfall is toast. Isn't that the silliest thing? I adore hot sourdough toast smothered in real butter.

I stopped buying bread. :)

I lost my teenage weight in college (about 20 pounds worth in a few months) due to a deep depression after a relationship breakup that left me entirely without an appetite. I don't recommend that. But I managed to maintain that after graduation by joining an after-work exercise class they had on-campus at the place where I worked.

According to the nutrition experts at the med school I do freelance writing for, the "healthy plate" is 1/2 low-carb veggies (broccoli, greens, etc.), 1/4 lean protein and 1/4 whole grains or high-fiber, starchy veggies (beans, etc.). Then there's sneaking little bits of exercise into the day, like parking farther away, taking stairs, that sort of thing. I really need to get back to trying to be semi-healthy because I've put back on all my flu weight.

Geeze, it seems like any time I've lost major weight, it's been from depression or illness, so I'm the last one to give advice in this area.

I lost 15 lbs in two weeks due to the same deep depression...*sigh* Since then, I've not been able to lose more than 10 lbs or so at a time, and that takes ~forever~!!!.

I don't think I really want to get sick and I tend to just eat more when depressed so I think I'll just keep in mind that "healthy plate" advice. Thanks.

Hubby and I have been doing a low carb/low glycemic diet recommended by our nutritionist. We went to see her because Hubby was having really bad digestive issues. The diet started as a means to make him feel better, and I went along because it's silly to cook two separate things when it's just the two of us. But we've gotten more dedicated, and since last Thanksgiving, he's lost 50 lbs. and I've lost 25 ( ... )

That sounds a bit strict for me, but good for you guys for sticking to it.

Oh! And I meant to add that my job is totally sedentary, as well -- sitting in my office writing. And I've lost the 25 lbs. without adding any exercise to my routine (I hate exercise!). Hubby plays tennis two or three times a week (he did before the diet) and he's continued that, but not added any extra exercise. I'm thinking of putting some walking or somesuch into the rotation. It's bound to help things... I think I would have lost more than I have, but I had some health issues for a few weeks that put my body into a plateau. Until then, I was averaging 2 lbs. per week and since those things sorted themselves out, I'm back to about that ( ... )

Twice I lost somewhere between 30-40 pounds in about three months. Both times I gained it back cause it was hard to stick to.

1. Calorie counted, I could have 1,000 calories a day of any kinds of foods I wanted, but everything else had to be fruits and veggies, Any type of sauce, butter or dressing counted towards the calorie count part.

This was difficult because it was a pain in the ass to figure out calories on stuff that didn't have a handy chart and eating out was worse. Unless they could tell me the calories (like at some fast food places)? I was stuck with plain salads and veggies, and who wants to pay restaurant prices for something you could just have at home.

2. Went completely vegan. The nice thing was I could still have sugar. I felt great on this "diet", but I missed cheese and sour cream and ice cream and butter and couldn't stay the course.

Both times I didn't exercise at all.

I'm actually going to be starting something new soon, but can't say if it works until I try it for a while.

I so very much don't want to do anything with charts and counting. I always get this rebellious self-destructive streak whenever I try to abide by "rules". It ends up worse than when I started.

Let me know how the new thing works out.

Absolutely. I will likely post about it sooner or later.
