I cannot help but laugh at the end of an election cycle. There are people who are all sorts of mopey about the results, as if the unicorn factories will shut down, and the rainbow powered love machines will only be able to print out half as many strawberry-scented welfare checks as before Tuesday night. And for those whose group won, well they just ( Read more... )

I am happy to see more balance in the state legislature as well as the Congress. Even though I don't agree with some of the Republican agenda to reverse what Obama did these past two years, I still think balance of power on the state and national level is better for all of us.

Regarding the resounding defeat of any tax increases, well it doesn't surprise me. Yes public sector salaries and benefits are way out of sink with reality and absolutely needs to be addressed since we the taxpayers are expected to fund those generous state pensions. I do hate to see health care for indigent children cut. I guess the ERs will have to continue their heroic efforts to provide that care. Then again, we could withdraw from Afghanistan and divert the billion dollars we spend every month on that futile cause, and send it to the states.

The huge upside of the balance of power is that there will be so much backbiting over the aisle that no one will be left to ruin our good times.

Re: the money, If you cut the (rather enormous) fat, starting with the benefits and salaries, and the public art, et al, then we can fund the safety net stuff that any good civilization ought to. The thing about Afghanistan is that the money is going FROM the states into the federal coffers; I'd prefer that it didn't leave in the first place, and certainly not to a war that those in charge have no idea how to or any inclination to win.

So there's that.
