Some years ago when I was working a soul-sucking retail job, I was asked to do an extra task that really put my priorities in life into focus. The register manager approached me and said "would you go clean out one of the men's room stalls?" She didn't point out which one, which tells me it will be completely apparent which one. Cutting ridiculous programs as you point out, that benefit none or only a few is one way to save. My favorite would be to eliminate the fraud that is rampant in agencies where people know how to use the system to their advantage at our expense. Of course, that would mean hiring more government workers to investigate it. Helping poor kids is on my list to keep, as they have no say and also veterans who return from war mentally damaged and end up on the streets for lack of help.
