darker readings of the doctor (courtesty RTD)

probably others have noticed this, but in case not. . .

1. the surface reading: as martha tells folks in her story, the doctor helps everyone and leaves, never asking to be thanked. heroic, right?

2. the darker reading:

a. the master looked into the vortex and heard the sound of drums: this is the keystone to his character. the doctor looked into the ( Read more... )

yeah, that's an interesting one here, isn't it?

one of the best audios, too. pd is excellent in it. i wish he'd gotten better scripts on tv. . .

PD basically insinuated that in an interview (one of the extras on the Castrovalva release). I still blame JnT for that, with the cost cutting stories that were mediocre at best. I'm one of those minority that hates the Kinda/Snakedance stories. And after such a great story like Earthshock, TimeFlight was garbage.

On the other hand, Enlightenment was incredible - too bad Barbara Clegg didn't write anymore stories.

i'm with you to a certain extent, but i'm afraid if you're putting earthshock above kinda and snakedance, there may be many things the two of us will not see eye to eye on, my friend! ;)

One thing you don't mention is that the Doctor was taught Emotional Detachment at the Academy. Time Lords aren't supposed to get tangled up in messy human emotions, any more than they're supposed to get tangled up in human (or anyone else's) affairs... They're supposed to be distantly aloof/superior to all that ( ... )

what you say certainly fits with what we've been shown. . .

what i love about the whole first-meeting-sarah-jane thing is that he is both clearly in love and DT is channeling tom baker. hooray!

David is channelling Tom - but also himself - Sarah Jane was his first Companion, just as Tom was his first Doctor - so there's personal glee at having Liz Sladen on set as well as his character's joy at seeing an older, much loved Companion again...

... I'm going to have to break out one of my Tennant/Sladen OTP!!! rants. ;)

Seriously, though, those two had perfect chemistry together, coupled with a wonderful new frisson, as a result of their respective real-life ages, that a) the original series, as good as it was, never offered, and that b) is still relatively rare in romantic fiction ( ... )

Very much agreement. Just this morning I posted some meta at my LJ about the similiarities we've seen in Rose's and Martha's experiences, and how they are indoctrinated as companions by a process of alienation from their conventional lives/families and a growing devotion (cult of personality?) to the Doctor. Which would prepare them very well for...running away. Or more accurately, being running away facilitators. If that makes sense.
