ok, so i had an elaborate set of reasons for this, but my LJ ate them, so i'm just going to state the thesis and see if anyone who reads this without me crossposting it all over has anything to say about it. then maybe i'll say more and with evidence and such

I think I agree with that, but I also think that the initial romance wasn't supposed to end up nearly as foregrounded as it was. My personal theory is that Doctor/Rose was written originally as more subtext than text, but the execs liked it so it got pushed in S1, and it worked for the audience so it got pushed even more in S2, which meant that the backing away was a bigger step than was originally meant.

that's plausible. maybe RTD got into a mess when all he meant to do was romance it up just a little?
