A bit late, but I've been busy getting ready for this.

I'll be presenting on Tor for NOVALUG this Saturday, 10 April 2010 at the Herndon Library in Virginia. The library opens at 1000 EST5EDT, so the LUG meeting will probably begin shortly thereafter in the conference room. I'll be talking about what Tor is, how it works, and how to use it properly. There will be a short demo and I'll be taking ( Read more... )

Cool! Will you have slides, or something that you can put online for later perusal? I'd be really interested but I'm not in your geographic area.

I've tried Tor but it was a quite frustrating experience for me. I could not coax a speed out of it that would make it viable even for text-only browsing. So the only usage scenario I can imagine is pick the site, and then post a comment you've written offline there, but if something requires registration (so, email, pretty much anything other than 'guest' comments), it seems like a nightmare. Maybe I just had bad luck. Late at night it seemed to be more manageable than earlier in the evening, but still not useful in the practical sense.

Also, while I had no problems getting it to work under Linux, I could not get it to work under Windows at all. I know you don't use Windows, I myself mostly use Linux (writing this from under Debian), but I was trying to find an anonymization solution for some friends of mine who are Windows users that's easy to install. I concluded that it would be easier ( ... )

I will have slides that I'll post to my website as an OpenOffice Impress document (though I can convert it to Powerpoint).

I've had a lot of success using Tor, moreso in the last year or so because the number of nodes has increased due to political actions around the world. I also stopped using Privoxy for Polipo, which seems to work more efficiently. Also, the codebase is steadily being optimized to speed up connections during the routing phase.

Have you tried the Tor Bundle for Windows?

Oh please don't convert it to Powerpoint ;] (I don't even have Powerpoint under Windows.)

BTW if you use Impress (finally someone!) have you tried holding a presentation by exporting to PDF and then using Impress!ve? I recently discovered this and it's usually appreciated by the audience. (It can display any PDF file, but I don't know if Powerpoint can export to PDF, I know for a fact Impress can because I use that function very often.)

Here is something tricky I came up with a few months ago, it might be worth a peek.

Yup I also used Polipo. (Good to know - it was my first option, it just seemed nicer than Privoxy for no particular reason. ^^;)

Have you tried the Tor Bundle for Windows?

Yes, it was a disaster >_< Maybe because I tried it under Windows XP and not Windows 7? I haven't tried Windows 7 yet.

I doubt it would have worked, anyway. I put up the Impress and PDF files.

I've not heard of Impressive - I'll check it out. Thank you!

Thanks for the post, I will definitely give that a try and see how it works.

Polipo seems much less finicky than privoxy ever way.

I've used it a few times to good effect. I wonder what was going on...
