Pressing the button, because touch screen voting sucks. allanh October 31 2008, 05:42:22 UTC
And that's why Randy and I became permanent absentee (Vote By Mail) voters in Santa Clara County right after we moved to Sunnyvale. Opti-scan ballots, and no long lines on voting day.

I was impressed - they even sent each of us a little "I voted." sticker to wear on November 4th!

We use Ink-A-Vote here; my only problem with it is that the ballot is not easily human-readable, though it can be deciphered with the help of one's sample ballot. Since they've added the machines to detect overvotes before the ballot is submitted, that's an additional plus.

We have optical scan ballots here -- they're great for quick lines! It's crucial to have the paper trail, but it's almost useless unless there's a requirement to automatically recount some number of randomly chosen precincts as an check against malicious (or incompetent) computer programming (Diebold makes optical scan machines, too...)
