Let's get some discussion up in here!

I remember back in the day when a new album would come out and a few of you guys would break it down and review it. I'm not going to go into that much detail here, but I would like to talk about Album Raises New and Troubling Questions since it seems no one has done so yet ( Read more... )

I love "Marty Beller Mask," too, but it's definitely a novelty song. It is pretty silly (even Flans said so), but it did sort of go viral just before the album came out, which I'm pretty sure is why it made it into their live set, however briefly. I actually missed the last performance by one night!

My personal favorite from this album is "Authenticity Trip." What a rockin' Flans tune! According to Flans it might have made it onto Join Us but it wasn't finished in time.

I've listened to the album quite a lot when it came out and regarded it as a "proper" album. Well.... almost. :) The Johns' ability (or perhaps vital need? %-)) of producing songs non stop have always amazed me. In the past years, podcast used to be the outlet, and now it's the whole album which is great! My personal fave is "Money for Dope". But no matter how many times I've heard it, I still fail to remember all the lyrics. :D Also, "Doom Doom" and "Now I Know" are real delight.

I too wonder what's happened to our once lively comm? Can it be we've all grown old and enjoy fangirling no more? I think it's true for me, although I still love the music, regard TMBG as my favourite band and am proud of their achievements.

I'm pretty sure song production is a VITAL NEED.
I also love Money for Dope, but yeah, no luck on remembering the lyrics, at least not in the right order.

I've grown tired of fangirling myself. Any crush I used to have is long dead. But they're still my favorite band and huge source of enjoyment in my life. I find the music soothing in a weird way.

I figured the community died while we were all waiting forever for a new adult album, and somewhere in that time period Tumblr got all popular and I guess everyone migrated.

I suspect that fangirling is something that (for most of us) can only be sustained during that initial period of discovery, when everything is so exciting and new. It's a great outlet for sharing your crazy crush with like-minded people. For me, I think there's a tiny bit of that left - I did get excited when I saw that brief interview from 1988 re Ana Ng recently - but mostly my appreciation of the band and their music is pretty rational now.

I do hope that when some new material emerges there are enough of us here to strike up a discussion about it though.
As for ARNATQ, I also listened to it many times when I first got it, but I don't know that I'll go back to it that frequently. "Money for dope" is the stand-out track for me too.

I don't think it's anything about this comm specifically--LJ is just a whole lot quieter in general. It makes me very sad. FWIW I'm certainly doing my part--like half the posts here ever are by me. But people often ignore them...

I suspect Whitney faked her death so she could be Marty full-time.

"How Now Dark Cloud" is probably my favorite on the album.

It's a really fun album, and I definitely support this "proper album PLUS a bonus misc album" thing they've done with the last two. But I've heard some people say it's better than Join Us and that's just ridiculous. So much of it is throwaway. My favourite songs on it are "Money for Dope," "Authenticity Trip," and "Mountain Flowers." The Other Thing stuff is pretty great too, though we did already have most of that.

Wow ok. That IS ridiculous. Join Us is an amazing album. I'm not ready to say it's my favorite yet but it took over my "most played" list really fast.

Wow, really? There are some really fantastic tracks on it ("You Probably Get That a Lot" in particular has become one of my favourite TMBG songs of all-time), but there's also a lot of it I'm rather meh on and even a couple of songs I actively dislike, which is rare for TMBG. It's a decent enough album, but I had higher hopes for it I guess. But still, it's very much a Real Album in a way something like ARNATQ is not, and it gets points from me for that.

The only song I don't like on Join Us is Dogwalker, which honestly I kind of hate. Everything else I like a lot.
