Computer horrors--don't do what I did!

Jul 23, 2004 11:09

I've been reading up on browser/email viruses, trojans and worms...and being the paranoid person that I am (or at least try to be), I decided to make the switch from Internet Exploder and  Outlook Not-So-Good to Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird. Why? Because they're a bit more immune to security probs, bugs, and most all other nasties out there. ( Read more... )

Hi, T.M.

It's funny you mentioned this. I read this post last night, thinking about a crazy virus, which I always catch, that causes pop-ups and underlines search words in the text on my screen.

I woke up this morning and guess what? It was in my PC, again. So I did what I always do- sytem restore.

I have tried Mozilla, but wasn't much for it. I liked it, but I design websites, and for some reason Mozilla won't show certain styles on pages, example: scroll bar colors. So, I'm stuck with IE. Hopefully when they work out the quirks in Moz, I will be able to get rid of IE, and the silly viruses. :)

Firefox IS worth the fuss.. itzwicks August 21 2004, 08:28:32 UTC
I'd rather have a secure browsing experience than to live life on the wild side. Kinda like having sex with a condom. ::smirk::

Give Firefox another shot, and also work with the upgrades as they come. You will be glad that you did.

Hi - I just switched to Firefox a couple months ago, and am loving it. Got Tbird, too, but I paid for a great spam program for OE that beats everything Tbird offers, so, after weighing the options, I'm staying with OE for the sake of my de-spammed sanity. I admit that one of the reasons I signed up for Lj & dumped my blog was because I wanted to try out the Firefox toys like Deepest Sender. I'm a dork.

I'm glad I distrusted Microsoft enough that I never tried to remove any of the imbedded fuckers like IE, though - horrors!

Some ass put AOL on my mom's computer, and the amount of fuckery that caused was just obscene. It took me about eight hours to clean AOL off of it, along with all the viruses and adware and random bullshit. The ass is on my shit list: nobody fucks with mom's computer! Eight hours. Motherfucker.

If it was that hard to clean AOL off a machine, I know it's outright useless to try to remove MS software. Sigh. Glad you got everything working again, though.
