Richard Matheson’s approach to and addition to Vampire fiction is a very welcome instance. I know this story has been around for a long time and has been very influential to many writers but it doesn’t suffer from the common tropes of “I’ve read this before” that usually come with readings of influential works. I've read this book several times and I enjoy it each time. The emotion and the frustration just seem so real (especially the section with the dog). It's a powerful read.

It's true that this is one vampire story that stands out from the others. The twists and turns you mentioned are amazing, as is the sense of the reality of this new world Neville lives in. I hadn't read Matheson before, but I'm definitely a fan now!
