Alien experience

I have a list of movies that I hope to see someday. This listing includes movies I’ve read about or heard about that interest me in some way. I keep the list handy so I am sure to try to find one of these movies to check out. This list is much like my books to read list in its scope and length. I know that I probably couldn’t get through either ( Read more... )

Perhaps you have a point about them going through their everyday work. However, forty-five minutes to get going? Even by the standards of the time this was too slow. As I mentioned in my post, the opening bored me even back then.

So glad you dug this movie, it is one of my all time faves, I probably watch it about once a year just to recapture the tone and mood.

Even with all those viewings I've never once thought the alien was defending itself or being scared. I always focus on Ash the science officer and the subplot of the corporation being willing to expend the crew's lives to get at this thing.

As for the planet and who is the alien, remember, the ship with all the eggs is an alien to that planet as they reveal in Aliens. I've always wondered what was that ship doing hauling all those eggs?

I remember absolutely nothing about Aliens. I'll have to watch it now, but I am drawing a complete blank.

Slow is good here! ext_287029 October 15 2010, 21:02:25 UTC
I hadn't considered that the slow start might have been Scott's way of revealing the scares eventually. I'd actually thought it might be because of how alien sci-fi was in the 70s. It was just getting its legs in movies, so I wondered if Scott wanted people to acclimate to the setting and the future world before dropping an alien creature on these people.

But I think it worked for the movie. We know it's horror, and the silence and strange, early awakening give the movie a creepy atmosphere even before they descend to the mini-planet.

Slow Beginning alexagrave October 15 2010, 23:14:00 UTC
I do agree that the beginning was slow - I even commented on it to my husband as we were watching. Then I completely forgot about how slow that beginning was until I read your post. In other words, I think the rest of the movie makes up for that slow start, which is a good thing. =)

I forgot to consider the question you raised...who are the monsters? Well, the alien is obviously one of the monsters. But so are the people trying to get the alien brought back to exploit it as a weapon. I just had not looked at it like that
