What prevents the boy from getting a job in Vegas?
Or is that he's on his way up at his current company and can have a good career if he sticks with it?

It is not so much that he has room to move in his current company, it is just that he is pretty established where he is and the thought of looking for a new job and re-establishing himself within it is difficult for him. Not many people are into the "starting over" thing. Especially when things are pretty comfortable in the current situation.
