The Joker's first attempt to break through that creepy, blank-faced attitude of Samara's involved taking her to Gotham's First National. Admittedly, her standing around while he had run around, chasing after screaming bankers like a kid after pigeons was sort of annoying, but her position at the door made it a lot harder for people to leave. He was very amused by the fact that anyone who tried to run to the exit seemed to halt, concerned and anxious in the face of her deadpan stare; it made grabbing them and dragging them back a lot easier, too. "You make a great partner, sweetie," he cooed at one point; she just turned his eyes on him and watched him as he planted a knife in somebody's arm.

She was also a great help when it came to inciting moral dilemmas in Harvey, who had the weirdest hangups about little girls being present when they "held trial" over some greasy Italian mobster - so to speak, though the Joker wasn't fond of it, but it suited Harvey for the time being and the ( ... )

The Joker was feeling manic and paranoid one night, and so he boarded himself up in his room to work on something designed to be highly explosive and annoyingly hard to disarm. At nearly three in the morning, he went downstairs to find something to eat; he found Samara sitting on the couch, staring at the snow on the television. Finding a box of stale Lucky Charms, he wandered back into the living room and slouched on the couch next to the girl. "Anything good on?" he asked.
"Yes," Samara said, remaining otherwise silent. The Joker stared at the snow fizzling on screen and, for one of the most completely insane, amazing moments in his short-term memory, he thought he saw exactly what Samara was seeing in the static.
They watched until six thirty, when the antenna finally managed to pick up the morning news. It was decidedly less interesting than the static.
