Crime and Villainy

We love having villains. I know, I know, they make things hard on the good guys. But they bring depth and dimension to the game and provide challenges. If all we had were heroes, there would be nothing to rp but wibbleshipping. Uh wait, is that a bad thing? Point being, there is more to rp than wibble and fluff, and we appreciate the dynamic brought in by the various degrees of evil present. Your characters on the other hand may wonder quite sincerely about where is the justice of killing a boss who just keeps coming back for more. Cue: One Winged Angel.

If you read the rules and FAQ, you will see a comment in there that the spell that brought you here has equally tampered with your powers. This actually applies to every character in the game. Yes, you are strong and bad ass. You'll also notice you are not as leet as you once were. Most of the time, this exhibits in the form of being shoved into a job class and essentially being restricted to the skills in that job, plus any special abilities listed in your application.

While you are reading those pages, you will also see notes that have to do with killing other characters and destroying the world. That's right, we've banned Sephiroth from calling Meteor and Kuja's not allowed to lob an Ultima. What you will see is a request to clear character deaths by us, before following through, both with the mods and the player in question. There is also mention that we need to know if you're going on a destructive spree. We don't want to stifle your creativity, and we absolutely want your villain to be in mucking up life for everyone else. But we are going to ask that you please clear any major plots or crime sprees with us. Here's a simpler way to think of it: If it's big enough to make the 5 o'clock news, or especially a "late breaking news report," we absolutely insist that you must clear it with the moderators first. If you knock off an npc guard or two to steal an airship, no big. Petty crime goes unreported every day, including the occasional murder or case of arson. But anything involving killing sprees, mass murder, torching towns, gross destruction of property? See the rule about making the news.

Here's the caveat: First time offenders to the not speaking to the mods first about major crime will receive a warning. Sometimes it's hard to know where to draw the line. If you persist in plunging ahead after that, without clearing it first, we do reserve the right to null the role play and/or remove the character from the game, for the sake of the game.

By choosing to play a bad guy, you're giving a little more responsibility than the average video game hero. You do have the potential to impact everyone on a grand scale. It's heady and thrilling and let's face it, frighteningly fun. But, with that comes the responsibility to also think about the game at large. We don't want to have to put up a "game over, Shuyin wins" and shut down. It's not feasible to have a bad guy full-on destroying things at all time. Or to put in terms we all know and love, we all want to do the side quests too and not just bounce from boss to boss to boss. Some of us need time to pick up new party members, go level grinding, and shop for new equipment.

Continuing with the console game analogy, sometimes you must lose. This is established very well in the games, that at some point, the bad guys bite it. The only exception that comes to mind is Beatrix. She always wins. It's annoying. And makes you throw controllers across the room around the third time it happens. At least she's hot. Be reasonable about this. You already  know what it takes to bring your bad guy down in the game. If you're faced with a similar fighting force, or one that is markedly larger, then you are going to have to fall to the heroes, or we are going to call foul. By larger numbers, take Jecht for example, it take three very well-trained fighters to take him down. If he was confronted with an attack group of eight people, it is a given that he would in fact get killed. Cue: Victory Fanfare and Victory Poses

We as moderators really haven't outright gotten involved too much in roleplay or reminding everyone of the basic standards of expectations. We're all mature adults here, and we don't feel like we need to babysit your hobby. But we are going to ask that you please not abuse our trust on this.
