It had been a quiet day, and Nyota was working on coding as she continued to perform routine scans. About halfway through shift, she noticed something unusual in subspace. A few minutes later she was almost certain that it was a transmission. "Captain," she said. "I'm picking up what appears to be a subspace transmission, but I can't detect any ships in the area. If it is a transmission it's heavily encoded."

Quiet days weren't something that James T. Kirk looked forward to. If they were quiet then it meant that something was wrong or that it could go wrong. Turning in his chair he looks over toward Uhura, frowning slightly. Something about what she said didn't sit right with him. It actually gave him an uneasy feeling, one he couldn't quite shake. "Can you decode it?" Might as well see if they could decode the transmission to see who or what was out there, even if she couldn't detect any ships. After all, there were numerous ships that could hide themselves from a ship's sensors and a alien... human's eyesight.

Her eyes narrowed in concentration at his question. The coding was complicated, but far from impossible. Once she'd identified the right algorithm, it shouldn't be difficult to crack. "I think so," she replied. "Actually, I think I've seen this coding before, but it'll take me at least a few minutes to run algorithms. I'll let you know when I have something. In the meantime, I suggest modifying sensors to see if there are ships out there that aren't appearing on our sensors."

It wasn't often that Scotty took a post on the bridge, but he was at the engineering station now, monitoring the engine remotely. It was dull work, which was why he avoided it, but the news of an encrypted transmission was enough to make him sit up and take notice. He glanced over at Uhura, then at the captain, and then returned his attention to the console in front of him, ready to adjust power levels accordingly should the order to modify sensors be given.
