tenshinoakuma CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Toto Sakigami [Mockingbird], Deadman Wonderland
In-Game Name: Toto Sakigami. Also goes by the alias Mockingbird
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: 4423, passenger/cabin boy
Appearance: Anyone who looks at Toto will see white, white, and more white. From his pale skin to his white clothing, he could almost be mistaken for a ghost if it wasn't for the small splashes of colour to give relief. At the very least, he bears a striking resemblance to an albino; the tips of his messy, white hair are red, matching the colour of his eyes. Even if you're a subscriber to 'red eyes means evil', you may find yourself taken in by Toto's innocent smile and animated antics; you'll often see something child-like or boyish in his movements.
[Edit: WELL, LOOKS LIKE CANON DECIDED TO SHOOT ME IN THE FACE IN REGARDS TO COLOURS. He's got pale skin, teal green hair, hazel eyes. I'll rewrite this pretty, later.]
Toto's clothing is light and loose, enabling ease of movement, and comprises of a long-sleeved jacket he only half buttons up, pants modified to end above his knees, and shoes that look much like sandals. While the sleeves of his jacket are long, they're also wide, allowing them to fall back to his elbow when he uses his abilities. But most striking about Toto are the very obvious stitched scars on his body: one across his head over his left eye, around both his wrists and above his knees. He doesn't make any particular effort to hide the scars, though they're sometimes obscured by hair or his clothing. They don't seem to hinder him in any way, though, because he still appears to be as enthusiastic and exuberant as any young teen.
[Note: I'll retcon as necessary when canon gives me a colour page with Toto in it!]
Personality: At first glance, Toto seems to be quite the friendly character: animated, cheerful and friendly. His youth and charisma can make him endearing to some, and his occasionally childish demeanour allows him to get away with poking his nose in others' business more than he rightfully should. However, for those who are a little less crazy and a little more observant than Toto's usual acquaintances, they're likely to pick up that there's something off about Toto. The gaps in his memory make Toto's mind slightly addled, which makes him come off as forgetful and odd at times. But these faults seem harmless enough, and people tend not to pry any further.
However, if they hang around Toto for long enough, they might discover the more unpleasant side of him. Toto isn't afraid to get up close and personal -- which often has the side effect of creeping people out -- even though he has an aversion to actual affection. He's fairly nosy, having little respect for the privacy of anyone other than himself; he'll both sneak around and observe people, unnoticed, as well as wring secrets out of a person with words to satisfy his curiosity. When it suits him, he has quite the manipulative streak, born from having a subtly possessive and territorial personality. Planting the seeds of doubt in people taken with his amiable personality in order to turn their fear or anger against someone other than himself isn't an act that's beyond him. After all, he's attracted to the beautiful, ugly dichotomy in people and loves seeing it in brutal action. Even when he's prancing around in his kid-like manner, Toto's constantly observing people and determining whether they're interesting or fun enough to be his.
On top of all this, he makes no effort to hide his flippant attitude towards killing and maiming, even having a love for the taste of blood. Having lived in an environment where brutal mutilations and death for entertainment were the norm, he doesn't view killing as a Very Bad Thing like the general public does. This doesn't mean Toto will go around causing random homicides; Toto usually doesn't instigate attacks. Generally, Toto only involves himself if he's interested enough or attacked by someone who has the intention to kill him and isn't part of his mental collection of people. However, the latter is somewhat rare; Toto walks with an air of nigh unshakable confidence that borders on cockiness. His incredible fighting abilities give him an aura of being 'untouchable', especially given his acute awareness of his surroundings and the situation, even when he appears to be off guard. Toto knows he's strong -- even though he may say otherwise -- giving him the confidence that allows him to ignore regulations to do what he likes. Still, Toto is aware he's nowhere near as strong as he used to be, and will err on the side of caution when dealing with those he feels battling with may be dangerous for him. He can easily tell the difference between someone wanting to kill him and someone wanting to rough him up, and knows when to run and where to hide in order to avoid being caught in crossfire. All this combined gives Toto a roach-like survivability.
Abilities/Weapons: Toto is a Deadman, a user of an ability called the Branch of Sin, which allows Deadmen to control their blood. Most other blood abilities involves the creation of weapons from their blood, but Toto's is unique amongst Deadmen; despite his Branch of Sin's dubious name, Love Labyrinth, it allows him to gain the abilities of other Deadmen after tasting their blood. Once he's gained an ability, he can mimic its usage whenever he wishes, even improving it on occasion. But although Toto has the reputation of the "strongest Deadman", he currently has less than a fraction of the ability he used to have, due to a battle that caused him to lose all his previously stolen blood abilities. Currently he only has one stolen ability: the Crow Claw, where he can create blades of blood from any bleeding part of his body. In general, his fighting style is highly acrobatic, and his quick and light movement augments his use of the Crow Claw. As long as he has space to move, Toto is incredibly difficult to land a hit on. Additionally, he demonstrates a high pain tolerance, to the point where his reaction to having his wrist half torn off is simply, "Ouch".
How well can your character hack?: While Toto may be the kind to sneak around and poke his nose into everything, he generally doesn't obtain his information electronically; technology really isn't his thing. As a result, he can't hack at all, and has limited familiarity with journals.
Weaknesses: While Toto may have been lauded as a ridiculously strong fighter by other Deadmen, the same battle that caused him to lose his amassed blood abilities also left his body in a more fragile state than it used to be. As he fights, his body tears itself apart, made worse when compounded by his acrobatic fighting style, where his flashy movements and sudden leaps place additional strain on his body. Any fight that's particularly strenuous or long-lasting is to Toto's distinct disadvantage, and even relatively short fights tend to result in him having to fix torn body parts post-battle.
Ultimately, Toto is a solitary bird; it's always about him, him, him. His selfishness, possessiveness and whimsical nature doesn't allow him to get close to anyone, made worse with his immature mindset where affection basically equates to cooties. He tends to regard people as toys he either adds to or discards from his collection, and often disappears and reappears whenever he feels like it, making him a difficult person to pin down. His difficulty in forming meaningful relationships with people because of these character flaws are only compounded by his broken memory and disregard for killing people.
History: About a decade and a half ago, in a mountainous part of Shashta, the discovery of a special type of manastone fuelled secret research and experimentation on its effects on people. Eventually, the experiments lead to a quake 10 years ago, causing a landslide that buried the laboratory and the immediate area. Four years later, Deadman Wonderland was constructed upon the remains. A kind of prison/fairground hybrid, Deadman Wonderland's purpose was to house the criminals who came with the immigration of a mining community to Shashta as well as become a tourist attraction. On the outside, Deadman Wonderland appeared to be a source of (mostly) family friendly entertainment, while putting the prisoners to work on constructive community labour. However, unknown to the general public, since the quake of 10 years ago, there were certain people discovered to be 'infected' with the special type of manastone, allowing them the ability to control their blood as a weapon. When the executives of Deadman Wonderland discovered this, these blood users were tracked down and often framed in order to ensure their entrance into Deadman Wonderland... the real Deadman Wonderland.
These blood users were known as Deadmen, and were made to fight against each other using their blood abilities (dubbed the Branch of Sin) in brutal battles known as the Carnival Corpse. Not only that, the previous manastone research was secretly being continued in Deadman Wonderland, with a side order of organ harvesting from the losers of the Carnival Corpse. Only those in Shashta interested in gladiatorial fighting and carnage knew of the Carnival Corpse, and they were sworn to secrecy.
Toto was very well known in Deadman Wonderland's underground, having a reputation as 'the strongest Deadman'. However, outside of his fighting capabilities, very little was known about him; he'd been in Deadman Wonderland for so long even he barely remembered a time outside of Deadman Wonderland. Toto had been someone who was obsessed with fighting in the arena of the Carnival Corpse, quickly expanding his repertoire of blood abilities he stole from the many, many, Deadmen he won against. He was something of a solitary bird and rather apathetic in his interactions with other Deadmen, and although he could often be found in the common areas of the underground, Toto also spent a good portion of his time sneaking around and exploring the usually inaccessible areas of Deadman Wonderland, learning some of its more hidden secrets.
But everything in his life changed in a Carnival Corpse two years ago. He was pit against the Wretched Egg, the Deadman who executives of Deadman Wonderland call the 'centre of the Branch of Sin infections'. The Wretched Egg only left death in their wake, easily disposing of any Deadman in their way. Toto was the first Deadman able to stand against the Wretched Egg, even managing to claw his way to victory from his Carnival Corpse against the Wretched Egg, but not without its cost.
The fight had damaged him. Badly. He lost all the blood abilities that he'd stolen from other Deadmen and his body became something weak and fragile compared to before. Not only that, damage to his head made his mind become addled and confused, resulting in strange behaviour before he disappeared completely. The people running Deadman Wonderland presumed he was dead.
But this was far from the truth. When his mind came together into something that resembled conscious thought, Toto found himself in a place completely unfamiliar to him; in the cargo hold of an airship bound for Bydan, far away from Shashta and Deadman Wonderland. Even though he had a broken memory with many jumbled thoughts plaguing his mind, Toto was conscious of his fragmented mind. Over the next year or so, he kept himself mostly unseen by other people, sneaking and stealing as he needed while he slowly pieced together his thoughts and memories.
Only in the recent months did his mind come together into something that resembled who he was before his battle with the Wretched Egg. But there were still some parts missing or rearranged. Things that were deeply ingrained, like his name and how to fight, he instinctively remembered. The name and location of the arena he remembered fighting in slipped his mind. He couldn't even remember when and from whom he'd stolen the Crow Claw ability, but guessed it had been during one of the many blank spaces in his memory. Toto's personality had become something a little more friendly, a little more childish, and a little more ~*loving*~, but even his mental damage couldn't change the selfish and territorial side of him. He knew there were others with the Branch of Sin, somewhere. He just needed to find his collection again.
Toto travelled, both on foot and stowed away on airships, occasionally allowing himself to be seen and interacting with people, though no one he came across sparked his interest. Eventually he wound up on board the 4423. Like his previous escapades on board airships, he kept himself hidden while watching their behaviour. Unlike the other airship crews, however, for some reason, some of the personalities of this crew felt a little... familiar. A little fascinating, a little crazy, and a whole lot of interesting. Toto couldn't help but take a liking to the crew, and decided to meet them in person and make them his.
SAMPLES- [BOSTON IN THE FALL]
Third Person (roleplay):
It wasn't difficult to con someone into showing him around town, even though Toto already knew the places of note within a day of stepping foot inside the town. The stranger had taken an immediate liking to Toto (maybe because they both had scars on their faces), and didn't seem to mind talking about his life and other useless nothings to Toto. After walking around most of the town, they came to rest on a bench in the street, and Toto was starting to seriously consider ditching. Before he could, however, Toto's little escort waved to a woman as she walked past, but she didn't seem to notice. It wasn't until Toto saw the sour look on the guy's face when she took the hand of another guy waiting for her that Toto's interest was finally piqued.
Giving his bench companion a sunny smile, Toto let a hint of innocent curiosity creep into his voice as he asked his 'friend' in concern, "You don't look as happy as you were earlier. Is something wrong?" Toto was prepared to verbally corner the stranger and force him to talk if he denied it.
Luckily, there was no need to; Toto's escort scratched the back of his head, looking conflicted for a moment. "Ugh, man. That girl I waved at earlier? Good friend of mine, known her for years. She just started attending university. I couldn't get in, but she promised to keep in touch. I dunno... just... she seems distant, lately."
Toto leaned back against the bench, hand by his mouth as he thought. Pressing the tips of his fingers together, he gave the guy a sidelong look, the corner of his mouth turning up into an impish grin. "When humans find someone new, they leave the old behind. That other guy... he's not like us. His face is unblemished and pure." Toto's grin widened when he saw the stranger's hand unconsciously go to his scar. "I can see she's important to you. But humans are so shallow. They always want perfection. They don't want anything that's flawed. So sad... "
"Nah... she's... she's not like that," the stranger said in a slightly raised voice, but uncertainty plagued his features.
Toto pressed on. "Do you think she feels you're important to her? Even though you waved at her, she walked right past you into the arms of another guy. Ignoring you, even though you've done so much for her..." Toto looked off in the direction the pair had disappeared to before turning his head back to the stranger. He gave the guy a pitying look, letting fake understanding creep into his voice. "Has she discarded you? All in favour for a guy she's met all of... twice?"
Toto watched the range of expressions crossing the stranger's face in interest. Disbelief, confusion, jealousy, before finally settling on anger that betrayed itself through balled fists. Humans were such interesting creatures to watch. The stranger abruptly rose from his seat, muttering something about having 'business to attend to'. Toto simply smiled cheerfully, "Take care ☆" before waving the stranger off, grin widening as he watched him disappear around the corner.
First Person (journal):
[Voice] [Private]
[the sound of wind] Only text and voice? I won't be able to enjoy people with this. Love and hate, joy and sadness, kindness and cruelty... humans are such beautiful creatures. This thing can't do them justice. [a short pause. His voice is a little thoughtful] I should meet the rest of the crew... maybe see if they have any sweet Branches of Sin~
[long pause] Ah? What do I do with this? ...This is no good; I'm not interested in toys that can't show me love. [the sound of wind gets louder, until it's roaring. It sounds like the journal is being dropped from a great height... Then static]
