First week complete, suckas.

Sep 25, 2009 15:44

Short story: my classes are AWESOME. Also, sort of important, so I'll get it out of the way first-I am not technically in my introductory Japanese class yet. I crashed it both today and yesterday... as did like ten other people, which bites. I am fifth on the waiting list. Also, today, three or so enrolled people didn't show up. Does that mean I'm ( Read more... )

You suckered me into registration with this:
I realized something that day, and told her as much: for all that I'm descended from both Irish and Scottish clans, more than anything I feel like my ancestors, traditions, and beliefs stem from the United States Armed Forces. I don't know when this happened? It still feels really true for me, though.

Prof P smiled, told me that that was indeed a family, and, when I told her I was distantly related to Robert E. Lee, she laughed and called me a blueblood.

Interesting realization on the Clan. Someone's got to explore this further . . .

Sounds like a great first week!

I think that the "exploring" will probably be up to me, because it seems like the sort of thing Prof. P will ask me about in the future.

It was THE BEST first week, and now my entire dorm is one huge, nerdy circle of friends. Yesterday was Videogames Vednesday in the lounge.

*Great* Summary! need_to_read55 September 26 2009, 04:19:05 UTC
This is really fun to read. Since you are CCS, and can wait til the last day of a class to drop it without penalty, why not stick with the Traditions in East Asia class for a bit? No need to make a decision now, is there? For the record (and without having read the piece -- but why let actual knowledge influence my opinion), I agree with your interpretation of the Milton. Perhaps the first day is too soon to come to any conclusions? Can't wait to hear about Tales of Genji.

And BTW, I'm lost with this initial thing. Unless it's E. McK, I'm out.

So, I'm hooked on your blog. It's the next best thing to being there!

Good call on the East Asian Cultural Studies class--it's still super interesting, and now that I know for certain that I'm not in Japanese 1, I actually need that class pretty hardcore in terms of units.

MILTON IS A BUTT. More to come.

Skype yesterday was fun. ♥ I'm glad that I can enjoy your presence without feeling un-college-y about it, and I can see Rocky without sneezing like a lunatic.

Okay, your dad has had tank warfare books in the bathroom for as long as we've known your family. And you're surprised that you identify with the clan that is the American Armed Forces?

Just sayin'.... :-)

And Milton *is* hard. And your insights do you great credit.

I just thought that meant we were super manly! I keep wondering why I like my bathroom at home the best, and that's all I can come up with. I guess I need to donate some armored warfare books to the Pendola showers...

Milton is my "it's complicated" on Facebook. :'-(

Sounds good to me! What mades your favorite profs your favorite? Just curious--I seem to only like professors who can lead a discussion without being overbearing with their own opinion... Prof. P is like that.

Ah, well... I barely talk in class because I get anxious about sharing my thoughts in front of so many people, so I like supportive professors that are aware that just because some students don't talk doesn't mean they don't think... Also, organized ones that get to the point quickly. I have somewhat of a teacher-phobia so... ones that are non-intimidating? And ones that personally reach out to me. I'm a sucker for personal attention, so I picked my major adviser because he kept telling me how I should be CS major, I'm so well-suited for it, blah blah buttering me up |D

But definitely, leading a discussion is one of the trickier things that a professor should master. P sounds like a winner.

I should warn you that I have been on waiting lists that didn't pay off. I have been on a bunch, as a matter of fact.

Your situation is different, though, so I think you'll do fine.

The waitlist didn't work out, sadly--however, my Japanese prof invited me to her office hour and said she'd try and help me test into Japanese 2. All is not lost!

Plus I'm determined as all get-out to learn this freaking language, so. There's that.
