I like this a lot, but I have just one question- if Bush is a chick, why does Hornblower refer to her as 'Mr. Bush'?

in the star trek universe all officers (and personnel) are referred to using the gender-neutral "mr", consequently she is referred to as "sir" by her junior officers. for reference, kirk always called saavik "mr" and janeway on "voyager" specifically tells all of her officers in the first episode that she does not want them to use "sir" and orders them to use "ma'am" or "captain" as she is a captain, she can deviate from the regs in this. this practice of using "mr" and "sir" isn't all that aparent in "the next generation" because the only female senior officers are referred to as "counselor" and "doctor", and on DS9 sisko was too familiar with Dax to use these terms and always called Kira "major" or "colonel".
