'Tis the season for scary movies. Some rank The Evil Dead as the best horror film of all time. What is your favorite scary movie?

"Some rank"? Is that kinda like "some argue" on Wikipedia? Anyhow, here's my personal list of the 10 Scariest (not necessarily "best") Horror Films. WARNING: Consists mostly of really obvious movies that ( Read more... )

Psycho, The Shining, and TCM are so fucking great.

And everyone always laughs incredulously when I say this, but sweet fucking Christ, The Ring is literally the only movie that has ever scared me. And when I say scared, I mean it. I don't know if my irrational fear of facial distortion was a priori to this or not, but seeing this + fear of dark mirrors/reflective surfaces = bad. The film style, the music, the colour filters...good god. I own the movie (on VHS, nonetheless) and have seen it countless times since watching it in theatres in seventh grade, but this still induces a similar reaction to the effect that Shining picture had on you:

I agree with you. That movie scared me. The first time I saw it I was home alone with my then 3 year old daughter. She was watching something in another room but came in and caught the last few minutes. I turned to do something as the credits rolled and I hear, "Mama! Lookit!" and turn back around to see her walking towards me with her hair pulled in front of her face.

I almost peed.

The Jap version of Shutter is pretty great too, I highly recommend it.

Note: It's either Jap or Tai, I'm not too sure now I think about it.

Nice list there. The Shining would definitely top mine as well.

Wow, that brought back memories (and not all good, hehe). I never really liked Texas Chainsaw Massacre much though, for some reason. Don't really know which movies would make my Top 10, but I know Event Horizon would be on it! Oh, and The Exorcist. Oooooooh, and Rosemary's Baby!

The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby are really good, but not particularly scary IMO. The former did sorta creep me out when I first saw it, since I was more or less a Christian back then. It's odd, my parents (and people their age) consider The Exorcist to be the scariest movie ever by an overwhelming margin.

I loved The Shining... Except I laughed throughout the whole thing...

Yay for the Evil Dead! They filmed that up in the mountains where I lived. and Bruce Campbell is a god of film and television.

Have you seen Delicatessen? I love that movie... Christine has to be my favorite Stephen King horror movie though...
