I question the assumption of pain and suffering awards. As a psychotherapist I rarely see money having any effect on peoples suffering unless they lack the basic necessities. As with many lottery winners, the extra money is only a temporary band-aid to their troubles.

interesting. maybe, the moral satisfaction of taking revenge on someone who hurt you (by making them pay you) is more important than getting the payment. you're getting a mental compensation for a mental injury.
