Also, I have always felt and agreed with the concept that we would punish character rather then actions, however, character is only expressed through actions, therefore, we cannot punish someone until an action is committed. It seems that those who reflect only on action are not completing a full arguement. For example, the full arguement should be...
1. A crime has been committed that deserves punishment 2. The crime was committed by Johnny's action 3. Johnny's character led him to perform the action 4. Johnny's character deserves punishment for the crime (1,2,3)
Instead of
1. A crime has been committed that deserves punishment 2. The crime was committed by Johnny's action 3. Johnny's action deserves punishment
The latter seems as if it is more accurate to punish the action of a crime rather then the person themself, therefore, unless you want to find a way to punish the spatio-temporal slice of Johnny committed action, it is completely impossible to punish him.
To say we are determined is in effect to say that we cannot be motivated by reason alone (please don't go with the tired old 'we may be inclined by our impulses to act according to reason' because that is not acting according to reason-that's still impulse) so whence then is our rational nature
