FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I spent so much time leading up to this convinced that Gillian was going to die that it did not even remotely occur to me that Richard might be in danger. I didn't even think anything of the goodbye scene at the train station! I was like, well, this is way too obvious of a goodbye, he'll be fine. I stopped worrying about him ages ago since everyone loves him and he exists almost entirely for fanservice at this point. AND NOW LOOK WHAT HAPPENS.
AND GOD, FUCKING MAYBELLE. MAYBELLE!!!!!!!!! I barely even have the energy to be upset, it's all just so bleak and cruel and why bother thinking anything could ever have anything approaching a decent outcome?
I don't think i'm even as sad about Richard as i am about Julia and Tommy. Richard was always meant to die, he's as much of a ghost as Jimmy was, but that Julia and Tommy got pulled into it and love him and depend on him and now he's gone, that's just straight-up mean.
I had a delayed reaction to how sad the dream sequence was, it took several minutes after the episode had ended for me to go "OH MY GOD THIS IS HORRIBLE" and he fucking died under the boardwalk where he and Julia spent their first night together, jesus fucking christ i hate everything
I do think it's apt that it got brought back around to Jimmy, and that Richard brought this on himself, but the more i think about it the more it doesn't make sense. Why take such a dumb risk when he finally has so much to live for? Richard needed Gillian to be put away so she wouldn't keep coming after Tommy, but she already said goodbye to Tommy in the previous episode! She had finally let it go and backed off! And if you're still really that worried about it, just fuckin' leave town! Plus Gillian doesn't particularly need to be punished anymore -- the only reason she killed the kid in the first place was because she didn't have Jimmy's body, WHICH IS NUCKY'S FAULT TO BEGIN WITH, and yet Richard goes to Nucky for help? Nucky who then forces Richard's hand to commit more murder because all that matters is what's convenient for Nucky.
The only thing that ever adds up is that Nucky is the worst. I feel like Jesse in the final episodes of Breaking Bad: "HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!"
I don't know, i also feel like Richard deserved a more honorable death than that. On the one hand, he chose to continue murdering after he'd lost his nerve for it, thereby endangering those around him and ensuring a bad end for himself, but on the other hand, he could have died rescuing Tommy rather than slowly bleeding out after accidentally killing an innocent girl. Jimmy was a huge mess by the end but he at least went down in a way that fit with the nature of his character. Richard's death scene was beautiful, but the events that led up to it just seem so contrived and unsatisfying. I wasn't even as in love with him this season as i was in previous seasons -- it was obvious they were kind of straining to keep him around and there weren't a whole lot of places for his storyline to go -- so i don't mind them getting rid of him before he got totally played out. But at the same time, we're four seasons in and they've still managed to keep Van Alden around. Writing yourselves into a corner is a CHOICE!
P.S. THANKS FOR RETROACTIVELY RUINING THOSE CHALKY/RICHARD SCENES >:(
I was really expecting Eli to bite it, especially considering he spent approximately half of this episode with a gun pointed at his head (to be honest i wouldn't have minded if Nucky had killed him, it was a good scene and would have been a fitting way for him to go), but i'm glad he finally got rid of Knox. Classic Eli bludgeoning. Knox turned out to be a way different character from what he seemed like in the first episode of this season (he seemed like fun evil! but he was actually annoying evil.) so i'm not disappointed to see him die. I did think/hope Willie would get caught in some crossfire somewhere along the line, but i guess that's too much to wish for at this point.
What a weird conclusion for the Chalky/Narcisse plot. The raid on the Onyx Club was so confusing and such an odd anticlimax for that storyline. Narcisse in Hoover's custody just makes me root for Narcisse. Yeesh.
Unexpectedly enough, the only person who ends this season happy is... Margaret?!!?!!?!??!? FINALLY!!!! Everything's coming up Rohan!
Ugh, whatever, i'm so tired of everything. So much random contrived bullshit just to maneuver things to the most miserable possible outcome. I need to get some new favorite shows where everyone i like doesn't die all the time.
