Watching TV: Can't turn off my Brain. I guess that's a bad thing nowadays.

I just can't. My brain in always running 'in the background' to use a computer phrase. Most times it pops up and says "Oh, come ON" and I can shush it and get on with watching the movie or TV show or whatever. I compensate by thinking of it as being an 'informed' viewer, a comfortable lie ( Read more... )

I'm a fellow Cold War 'fan', and what you said is right on. There never was any Red Button, much less a space age bunker under the White House. The big screens were all at Cheyenne Mountain, and worked by projecting slides. It's pretty strange just how DULL and unexciting the actual Apocalypse Machinery really is. Unless there's been some actual changes to the process that have managed to escape being reported, it's about as fancy and high tech as an IBM Selectric- and moves at about the same speed.

And the government is not always bleeding edge. I recall when my stepbrother was in active service with the Air Force, he was kinda jazzed about learning computer programming, but then he learned that he was learning how to code for machines that were old and outdated in the late '80s. Big, clunky mag tape and punch card machines. Things that made the Amiga seem bleeding edge tech. Useless for real-world application ( ... )

Thing is, I'm under the impression reading all this stuff that the 'designated survivor' is actually briefed on why it's being done and (if nothing else) is given a short 'what if' briefing. And given that Sutherland's character is meant to be a serious policy wonk, one would think he'd have read up on his potential responsibility ( ... )

I know, I probably seem completely insane going on about this. Maybe I am. It's just there's so MUCH story potential and drama in the whole Continuity of Government concept you could get a solid year of stories just out of the drama of selecting a whole new House and Senate. No need for scenery chewing 'right wing' generals chomping at the bit to kill them some AY-RABS to cover their coup.

THANK YOU :)

Common sense, right? I mean, you don't have to know jack crap about CoG procedures and protocol to KNOW "hey, um, White House could be next".
